THE POPPY APPEAL Each year the United Kingdom expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion's work through its generous support of the Poppy Appeal. It is one of the best known and supported campaigns in the calendar and the poppy has become a symbol of reflection and hope. In 2009 the poppy appeal in Spain District North raised a very impressive €101,515 the same region spent a over €80,000 on welfare for ex service men and women, and their beneficiaries. So please find a way to help us help those who gave so much. HOW YOU CAN HELP Poppy Book Club Are you an avid reader? Did you know that we have a poppy book club run by Mel Lethaby. We have a good selection of books for exchange and one off purchase. We ask for a small donation €1 for any book, or a mere 50c if you bring a book to swap for another. We also have puzzles, Videos, DVD’s, tapes etc. However, maybe you are not a huge reader but you are burdened by books, from guests and visitors. Why not donate them to the Poppy Book Club? Cash for Ink Cartridges We have managed to find a company to recycle your used printer cartridges. We get from a few cents to a few Euros each depending on the brand and type of cartridge. The post and packaging is free, so however much is raised goes direct to the poppy appeal. So bring any used cartridges to the next meeting, coffee morning or any event and recycle it. It’s better for the environment, it’s no hassle for you and we really do get something for nothing. Give your spend cartridges to Sue Taylor .RBLI Collectables for sale This year we have a selection of items for sale from Royal British Legion Industries, including Membership badges, Poppy lapel pins, Book marks, Archie the Bear, Address Books and even Christmas Cards. Not only does the price you pay give a donation to the Poppy Appeal but the purchase from RBLI supports an organisation that support disabled and ex –service personal. We have also managed to source for our branch members Poppy mugs and locally made Poppy polo shirts; again the profit from the sale of these items goes direct to the Poppy appeal. Home Collection Boxes Let’s face it we all hate small change, particularly the small denomination coins which easily slip though gaps in wallets, purses, handbags, and literally make a hole in your pocket. Why not keep a Poppy Box at home for your small change. In fact one of our members has two one at home and one in the car! These little boxes are poppy shaped and the cents soon mount up. That loose change has added up to an impressive €191 this year. Poppy People! Could you be a poppy person, do you have a few minutes to spare in November? We are very fortunate to have a lot of local business who support our Poppy Weeks in November, even better we have a lot of local people who make a donation to the poppy appeal in exchange for a poppy! But all this generosity means that the poppies soon get depleted and we are looking for people who could spare a few minutes to top up the boxes. So if you can only do a little give the gift of time.
